Ashikaga Yoshimitsu

(1358-1408). Third shogun of the Muromachi shogunate (1338-1573). Yoshimitsu was 10 when he succeeded his father Yoshiakira (1330-67) in 1369 after an interval with no shogun. As the first Muromachi shogun with sufficient authority to control the powerful Shugo families, Yoshimitsu succeeded in consolidating the power of the shogunate and extending military control over most of the country.
