jōruri

Form of dramatic narrative chanting to shamisen accompaniment that is commonly associated with the bunraku puppet theater and that flourished during the Edo period (1600-1868). As applied to the puppet theater, jōruri refers to the part of the performance that does not involve the puppets, their manipulation, or the staging; i.e. it involves the texts and their recitation.
