Mizusawa

City in southern Iwate prefecture, northeast Honshū. Mizusawa developed as an outpost when Sakanoue no Tamuramaro built a fortress there in 802. It was a castle town during the Edo period (1600-1868). Local products are rice, fruits, and Nanbu cast-iron goods. Pop. 61,000. (adapted from Japan: An Illustrated Encyclopedia.
