otaku

Term used in both Japanese and English. In English, the term generally refers to a type of geek focused on anime and manga, and it is used for self-description by anime fans. "Japanophile" is a word sometimes used to describe an otaku. In modern Japanese slang, however, an otaku refers to an overly obsessive fan of any one particular theme, topic, or hobby. Though the most common uses are anime otaku and manga otaku, the term can be applied to other areas of interest: pasokon otaku (personal computer geeks), geimu otaku (playing video games), gunji otaku (military geeks), and otaku that are extreme fans of idols (pop stars). While in Japanese the term otaku has negative connotations, in English the term is more flexible. (from Wikipedia)
