Riess, Ludwig

(1861-1928). German historian. Riess studied under Leopold von Ranke at the University of Berlin. At the invitation of the Japanese government, he came to Japan in 1887 and taught Western history at Tokyo University. He played a leading role in the establishment of the Shigakukai (Historical Society of Japan) and the founding of its journal Shigaku zassi (Historical Journal). He returned to Germany in 1902.
