Rikken Minseitō

(Constitutional Democratic Party). Also known as the Minseitō. Together with the Rikken Seiyūkai, one of the two major political parties of the early Showa period (1926-89). The party tried to resist pressures from the militarists; but unable, it dissolved in 1940. Two post-World War II parties, the Nihon Shimpotō (Japan Progressive Party) and the Minshutō, derived from the Minseitō. (adapted from Japan: An Illustrated Encyclopedia. Tokyo: Kodansha, 1993)
