Umezu Yoshijiro

(1882-1949). Army general and last chief of the Army General Staff Office. Born in Ōita Prefecture. In the early 1940s he commanded the Japanese Guandong Army in China. Becoming chief of the Army General Staff Office in 1944, he served until the end of World War II. On September 2, 1945 he represented the Imperial High Command in signing the formal documents of surrender on board the USS Missouri. Found guilty as a class A war criminal at the War Crimes trials, he died in prison. (adapted from Japan: An Illustrated Encyclopedia. Tokyo: Kodansha, 1993)
